It's no secret that what is "the most wonderful time of the year" can actually be anxiety-inducing and stressful for many. The reasons for this are plenty and studies have shown that anxiety can run high due to the "happiness trap", where "when we try too hard to be happy, we make ourselves miserable."

We have recently started incorporating CBD in its various forms into our daily routine; lotion for sore muscles and stiffness, drops for sleep issues, irritability and PMS, and wanted to know if this remedy could also benefit holiday depression and anxiety.

Allison Tryk is the founder of Floramye, an organic CBD product line comprised of a facial oil, body creme and oral elixir. We spoke with Allison about common misconceptions people have regarding CBD, the importance of choosing products made with organic hemp, and the benefits those with holiday anxiety and depression can gain from integrating CBD into their daily supplement routine.

Let's first rule out some misconceptions about CBD: what are a few you have heard that you would like to dispel?

Great question! While CBD has been known to improve your mood, it will not get you high. That one still confuses people. Cannabis sativa contains an array of beneficial compounds called cannabinoids. The best-known of these is cannabidiol, or CBD. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors in the body that help regulate sleep, inflammation, and mood. Companies test to make sure that there is less than .3% THC in legally sold CBD products. That’s the psychotropic part of the plant.

Like with any product you ingest or put on your skin, it’s important to know what’s in the bottle. Knowing what to look for on the label is the first step. To fully reap the rewards of CBD, look for a product that uses “full-spectrum.” But not all “full-spectrum” products are created equal.

I recently learned that some CBD companies claim that they are “full-spectrum” but use mostly isolate - just small amounts of the whole plant - in their product to meet labeling requirements. Isolate is less expensive to buy, easier to measure and doesn’t have color or smell, so this practice is more common than you would think. Many people find that products using the full plant, commonly referred to as the “entourage effect”, are more beneficial than products that just use isolate.

At Floramye, we use organic full-spectrum CBD so our products actually have a green tinge from the plant chlorophyll. By using a true full-spectrum product, you can reap the benefits of all of the terpenes working together. We believe nature already balanced this plant perfectly. If you see a product claiming to be full-spectrum, but it has no color or smell, that product may only be using a small amount of full-spectrum oil and the rest isolate - meaning you are missing out on the benefits of using CBD.

I also hear people say that they’ve tried CBD and that it doesn’t work for them. They may not have found the right product for them or maybe they did not give the product enough time. With many beauty products, it takes a few weeks to begin to see the benefits. But when CBD does work, it’s very effective! While the effects of the right creme will be immediate for pain and sore muscles, using an elixir or facial oil will have more subtle differences that build over time. If it doesn’t work the first time, try to experiment with dosages and brands until you find the right one for you!

There are also several good books available that address how CBD can help for specific needs. “CBD - a patient’s guide to medical cannabis - healing without the high” was written by our neighbor, Leonard Leinow. He has been working with CBD for years and this guide is very thorough and addresses a large range of conditions. We also like the book “CBD - Everyday Secrets” by Gretchen Lidicker. This is a fun read for anyone curious about introducing CBD to their daily routine. A bit of patience is required in finding the right CBD routine for you, but it is worth the effort!

Why is it important that people use products that are made with organic hemp? What is the difference between organic and non-organic? Are there any issues that could arise from using a non-organic formula?

Hemp is a hearty, sustainable soil cleaner. It will soak up whatever toxins and contaminants are present. These chemical fertilizers are not something you want to ingest. Similar to why it’s important to eat organic fruits and veggies, especially the dirty dozen like apples and peaches that absorb more pesticides through their thin skins. CBD and essential oils are both a highly concentrated version of the plant. When fat soluble pesticides are present, they are also passed through to the product during the distillation process. This is problematic because some pesticides are known neurotoxins and others are carcinogenic.

Overall, we believe that organic farming benefits the local environment and ecosystem as a whole. We feel that hemp grown thoughtfully in the sunshine is going to be more healthful than industrial hemp grown under artificial conditions. Again, we hold the idea that nature is in balance and the health of bees and other organisms is vital to our whole system.

Our products go through a rigorous certification process where we track the movement and process of our organically sourced ingredients and we can clearly show how they come together to form our line. This brings a new level of transparency and can be important for people who have chemical sensitivities. These products are clean!

The holidays can be a triggering time for those with anxiety and depression. How can CBD help?

The holidays are so triggering, I’m already stressed! From busy airports to large family get togethers, this season is likely to send your stress level soaring. The good news is that CBD can help ease the strain of the holiday hustle without slowing you down.

Recover quickly from holiday travel: CBD can help re-energize and ease sore muscles so you can quickly transition from weary traveler to joyful memory maker. Check laws internationally for CBD before traveling across international borders.

Make the most of down time: CBD can help quiet your mind and balance your emotions, making it easier for you to shutout the holiday noise and power down for a bit. Hemp oil interacts with our endocannabinoid system, the system in our bodies responsibly for maintaining homeostasis (or stability and balance), making it easier to reduce stress, increase sleep and regulate mood.
