Getting Started With CBD Cosmetics

With almost a dozen states legalizing marijuana in some form — medicinal or otherwise — it’s clear that cannabis is making waves in the world. This is particularly true for the beauty and wellness worlds, who’ve latched onto the many efficacious properties of cannabis that can soothe sore muscles, nix acne, and reduce inflammation, particularly so with the cannabinoid CBD. In other words? It might just be the next miracle treatment.

For the uninitiated, cannabinoids are the active compounds found within the marijuana plant, over which there are currently believed to be anywhere between 60 and 80, depending on who you ask. The most commonly known one is THC, a psychoactive compound that is responsible for the described “high” feeling, but can also treat glaucoma and nausea, according to research.

But the buzzy compound right now is CBD, which may have a slew of healing effects both when applied topically and ingested internally, including reduction of inflammation, anxiety, physical therapy and more. And because it’s non psychoactive — CBD can also be derived from hemp plants, the sister of marijuana within the cannabis family — it’s become a favorite of athletes, healing shamans, and just about everyone in between for its many healing powers. Check out these CBD products for better skin, less pain and more.

1. Ildi Pekar Sleeping Mask, $125

Used in place of a night cream, this lightweight yet heavy-duty hydrator helps to calm any redness while you snooze. Pekar loves using CBD oil in her products for its ability to aid in cellular turnover, too.

2. CBD For Life Pure Foot Cream, $20

CBD oil is a favorite of Hollywood stylists to dole out to their celebrity clientele, as it reduces the pain and inflammation associated with standing on a step-and-repeat and posing for photos for hours on end. This particular foot formula has humectant ingredients like TK to hydrate, plus an energizing mint scent to quite literally put a pep in your step.

3. Jersey Shore Cosmetics Super Sativa Medicinal Hydrating Lip Balm, $10

Don’t get it twisted: this brand has nothing to do with the similarly named reality show on TV, nor its cast. Rather, it’s 100% organic, paraben-free, and of course, incredibly efficacious. Just a few swipes will leave your lips hydrated thanks to hemp seed oil, plus nourished with vitamins and minerals including calcium, magnesium, sulfur, potassium, iron, zinc, and phosphorus.

4. Apothecanna Bug & Bite Insect Spray, $26

If you’re the type of person who is a veritable magnet to mosquitoes come warmer weather (*slowly raises hand*), keep a bottle of this all-natural repellent on hand. It uses CBD and citronella to repel bugs, while smelling incredibly refreshing to the human nose thanks to notes of eucalyptus and tea tree oil, which soothe skin, too.

5. Charlotte's Web Pure Hemp Infused Body Cream, $50

This eco-certified, organic body cream turns moisturizing into a near-religious experience. Nan ultra-concentrated dose of CBD—300 mg, to be specific—

6. Foria Wellness Awaken Intimate Massage Oil, $48

Packed with a slew of aphrodisiacs like cardamom, vanilla and cinnamon, this lube is like the Rolls Royce of personal lubricants. Here, CBD helps to mitigate any pain, discomfort or dryness associated with sex.

7. Mirai Clinical CBD Bath Bombs, $8

While there are a variety of CBD-laced products for the bath, none make tubby time more fun than a bath bomb does. (This is an objective fact.) Available in scents including relaxing lavender and energizing lemongrass, a soak with one of these CBD babies will leave you and your muscles stress-free after about 20 minutes.

The Literary Edit: For The Love of Books

We are acknowledging this month that, like the calendar year, we also go through "seasons" of preferences--particularly when it comes to reading. While in the summers we crave lighter, airier works of fiction to the deep, enthralling stores that move us in the winter, for the month of February we are focusing on 3 memoirs that are perfect for hunkering down and fighting the cold.

What the Heck is Wellness, Anyway?

As inflated with trends and fads as the wellness industry has become, that saturation has inadvertently caused a lot of confusion around what wellness is. Whether it's a daily exercise regimen, clean eating or simply being more present, we are taking a moment to acknowledge that wellness is an ever-evolving, fluid phenomenon that means something different to everyone.
